The Explosion of ‘World Plant Milk Day’

The second annual World Plant Milk Day is August 22nd following huge success in 2017 with millions of people all over the world showing support for the campaign with the hashtag #WorldPlantMilkDay trending on Twitter.

Our meat-free fast food restaurant in Birmingham is celebrating with 20% off ‘Nice Shakes’ - our popular all-natural, dairy-free shakes. Choices include the most popular Cheeky Choco and the Raspberry Ripple, Peppermint Patty and Straight-Up Strawberry made from fresh fruits, plant-based milk and simply natural ingredients. All Nice Shakes are finished off with a swirl of dairy-free whipped cream.

Plant-based milks are really delicious and are worth a try! We decided to launch our Nice Shakes using a blend of soya milk at Not Dogs Birmingham and Chessington not only for veggies and vegans but for flexitarians and those who are lactose-intolerant too meaning no-one misses out. They are a big hit!

World Plant Milk Day celebrates the explosion in popularity of dairy-free milk alternatives and raises awareness of their many health, animal welfare and environmental benefits something which we happily align with; better fast food for us, animals and the planet.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, ’free from’ milk and cheese is up 10% year-on-year and in 2017, dairy-free cheese has grown an incredible 80% suggesting they are becoming a staple for consumers, and a trend that is here to stay. It’s not just the rise of vegetarianism and veganism that’s impacting on the shift but another group known as ‘flexitarians’ who reduce the amount of animal products in their diets, whether it be for one meal or a whole day.

The range of quality milk alternatives has grown massively; in the past six years, plant-based milk sales have doubled worldwide. The dairy industry contributes highly to climate change, making the simple switch to plant-based milk helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Soya milk, used at Not Dogs, is a great source of protein as it includes all nine essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein). It also helps boost calcium and iron levels as well as being a rich source of B vitamins. Choose the unsweetened versions to minimise added sugar.

World Meat Free Week

Last week was World Meat Free Week and Not Dogs were (and still are!) proud to be a supporter of this fantastic campaign alongside many other fantastic brands.

The website www.worldmeatfreeday.com makes a really interesting visit…

Check out the sustainability calculator and calculate the impact of going meat-free. For example, if just you went meat-free one day a week (and we hope Not Dogs make that easier for you!) you’ll save the carbon equivalent of boiling 1,165 kettles!

Over on the recipe section you can enjoy our ‘Jamaican-Me-Crazy’ dog inspired by Jane’s visit to Jamaica a few years ago. Made with jalapeƱos, crispy lettuce, mango mayonnaise and jerk sauce, it will awaken your taste buds and bring a touch of the Jamaican sunshine to your BBQ!

And of course, the blog is jam-packed with interesting information to make going meat-free any week of the year simple!

Reducing your meat intake for any amount of time - from one meal or one day to a whole week or month makes all the difference so we encourage you to continue 'World Meat Free Week' on into the future! Don't forget every Monday there's 20% off our 'Pizza Mark-herita Dog' in celebration of Meat-Free Monday at Not Dogs Birmingham!

Opening a Restaurant is a Rollercoaster of Emotions!

After opening our first restaurant in December 2016 the ups and downs of actually opening (let alone the day-to-day running) quickly evaporated from our minds but last month we found ourselves there again opening our second location at Chessington World of Adventures!

The opportunity arose over nine months ago and we just couldn’t miss out on the chance to be the first dedicated meat-free business inside a theme park! Opening the restaurant has taken a lot of hard-work and grit, not only from us but from our fantastic staff at the Birmingham store and also the great team at Chessington World of Adventures themselves.

Through the hardest work we found many moments to laugh… from when Katie had her head stuck in a bin for over half an hour (really!) to when Jane opened the oven too quickly and nearly knocked herself out!

That’s what makes the entrepreneurial life so fun and stressful… it really does throw a rollercoaster of emotions (excuse the pun) at you every single day but - we wouldn’t have it any other way and seeing so many happy customers and fantastic reviews already (see below) makes all the hard-work worthwhile.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who supports Not Dogs.

Katie & Jane x

Meat Free this May!

National Vegetarian Week is great for encouraging meat-eaters to reduce their consumption of meat just a little… not only for health benefits but also for the environment and our furry friends!

Even one day a week (or indeed a month/year!) helps, here are a few simple tips to get you started:

Try a new veggie recipe every week - if you enjoy cooking why not make at least one of the dishes you prepare meat free. Soon you’ll have a list of some great recipes that you love to cook and eat on your meat free days.

Substitutions - suppose you guessed we’d mention meat alternatives but honestly, places like Not Dogs and products like Quorn, Linda McCartney & VBites are a helpful and tasty transition from meat to meat free… you can go on eating what you’d normally eat but meatless!

Tell friends and family - if you really want to make this commitment, then it’s great to have the support of people around you so tell them your reasons why in a positive way. You can still enjoy delicious food together… you never know, you might inspire a few others.

We’d love to hear your veggie tips so please get in touch on social media! And of course, would love to see you at Not Dogs LinkStreet over National Vegetarian Week!

Plain Jane Jumps for WWF! **UPDATE: She did it!**

**UPDATE: She's only gone and done it! Scroll to the end of this post to read all about it!**

As a life-long supporter of WWF (and animals in general!) Not Dogs co-founder Jane is ticking off something that’s been on her bucket list while raising money for her favourite charity… she’s skydiving!

Jumping 13,000 feet out of a plane is a fear of Jane’s and because it’s a fear… she’s making herself do it! There was no contest when thinking which charity she’d like to support, Jane has already ‘adopted’ a panda and a tiger from WWF and knew she had to do something a bit daring to deserve your donations!

Jane was inspired by Kickin’ Katie who skydived in New Zealand in 2010 and just loved it! Let’s hope Jane feels the same way!

Why WWF? We’ve reached a critical point - our planet is under pressure like never before. In less than 50 years our global wildlife populations have declined by more than half.

WWF is at the heart of global efforts to address the world’s most important environmental challenges: safeguarding the natural world, tackling climate change and enabling people to use only their fair share of natural resources.

Katie & Jane and everyone at Not Dogs would be forever grateful if you could donate to Jane’s Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/janeyateswwf. No matter how big or small, every penny raised will help WWF tackle threats to amazing wildlife and their habitats around the world. For example…

£3 pays for a community based anti-poaching patrol protecting tigers in Nepal for one day

£10 could help fund the training of a boat crew member on smarter fishing methods to reduce their impact on marine wildlife

Head over to social media for updates on Plain Jane’s jump for WWF and of course for her thoughts after the big day in June!

**UPDATE** From Plain Jane...

Well, that was amazing, scary, weird, invigorating, crazy, unreal! Falling through the clouds at 120mph is something I will never forget and, I encourage everyone to do!

The mix of noise and complete craziness when you're about to jump and while falling through the air to the peace (and relief!) you feel when your parachute catches the wind is simply indescribable - what a feeling!

Hinton Skydiving Centre made the whole thing seamless, enjoyable and in turn, me less nervous! I would skydive back there in a heartbeat... maybe a change in vocation - Plain Jane - Skydive Instructor!?

Again, thank you to everyone who sponsored me - it made the jump even more memorable and I know WWF is very grateful.
